The University of Sunderland’s Student Union has launched a new initative that celebrates the city’s student friendly venues!

Sunderland Students’ Union (SU) have launched their new City Venues Guide, with funding from Northumbria Police and Crime Commission.

The project aims to give students safe spaces to go in Sunderland City centre which celebrate inclusivity, diversity and equality.

City Venues Guide, led by Vice President: Wellbeing & Engagement Tosan Velor, aims to provide student-friendly venues by providing information on what each venue has availables.

Velor explained: “In a city as vibrant as Sunderland with a university which prides itself as inclusive and diverse, it was important for us that we help our students throughout their journey at university to identifying safe and student friendly places for them in the city.”

The SU has worked with students to research exactly what they want from a venue and combined this with information gathered from a previous project (WEARSafe) to propose the standards for the guide.

Northumbria Police and Crime Commission have funded £2,000 to help develop the project and Dame Vera Baird QC, Northumbria Police & Crime Commissioner said it was a great initative.

Dame Vera said, “I’m delighted to have worked with Sunderland Students’ Union on this initiative and I look forward to hearing about the successes of the scheme.”

Velor says: “It was important to make sure students felt safe and treated in a friendly manner when developing the guide.”

”We are very proud to be working in partnership with the wider community and Northumbria Police to make sure students at the University of Sunderland have a valuable and life changing experience on & off campus.”

The working relationship between the Students’ Union and Northumbria Police has continued to grow following a series of previous collaborations, developing campaigns designed to tackle hate crime in the region.

Sunderland City Council has announced a dramatic rise in incidents of hate crime, with cases such as sexual violence, mental abuse and racism becoming a growing concern.

As a result, the Students’ Union is prioritising student safety both on campus and in the city.

Venues will receive a City Venues Guide pack, which will contain beer mats and window stickers, as well as helpful venue resources available to download online.
