Review: Improbable Fiction

Posted on 19 June 2010 by

It’s been somewhat of a turbulent season for the Royalty Theatre but what better way to top things off than with this hilariously brilliant play by Sir Alan Ayckbourn.

A group of writers meet up on a cold winters night to discuss their latest works. But as the group disperse and head home, things take a slightly odd turn for poor Arnold, as each of the stories the writers are creating come to life!

This funny and interesting bit of theatre verges on the mundane during the first act, and I thought that the first act took a while to gather any pace, however as soon as we returned from the interval the play came into its own. With over 56 costume changes, and a crazy mix of crime thriller, Victorian romance, SCI-FI (or Sci-Fact as Clem would put it)  and the odd musical number chucked in for good measure, Arnold is left wondering if there was something in those mince pies Isla has dished out!

A fantastic performance from all the cast, as they switch seamlessly between characters. A fabulous ending had me almost wetting myself, with the appearance of one of the best costumes I’ve seen in ages.

Its on till Saturday at the Royalty Theatre on Chester Road.

Get down and have a giggle.
