line for this month is …..
Richard Gardner
http://www.myspace.com/iamrichardgardner
Ask Richard Gardner to describe his music and he’ll quote Frank Zappa at you; “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture”. Or else he’ll ask you to go and talk to someone who’s seen him play live. This reluctance to pigeon-hole himself or his music springs from more than just a desire to be awkward or pinned down to a narrow definition of himself. Every song that “falls out” as he puts it, is different to the last. His voice finding and mastering new territories to suit the musical landscape that unfolds before the listener.
Early Maze
http://www.myspace.com/earlymaze
Early Maze are a three-piece band from the North East of England: Jamie Harwood, guitars and vocals, David Thompson, drums, and Michelle Gunton on bass guitar and vocals. We have been together for a little over a year and have just completed a 12 track album, entitled ..We Don..t Know Where We Are, But We..re Not Lost… Early Maze create a sound which is their own unique new take on psychedelic rock music. Wide ranging, eclectic influences can be heard running through the album, but the end result will always sound like Early Maze and no-one else.
The Villiens

We recently appeared in NME as one of their Breaking Bands, this is what they had to say about us …
” … you should check out Newcastle’s The Villeins. Their heavy post punk couldn’t be more gloomily euphoric if it was overdosing in a gutter. Their Muscular dirge rattles about like a skull beneath a cosh – it’s both dark and enlightening. “
NME Review 2:
The Soviets
http://www.myspace.com/wearethesoviets
The Soviets are a Newcastle-based Indie band, whose intense dance-influenced music and singable melodies have caught the attention of audiences and press alike, allowing them to forge a strong relationship with a sizeable base of loyal fans.
Following an unusual debut gig playing to 2,000 people at Newcastle’s city hall, the band have consistently refused to rest on their laurels, swiftly making a name both for themselves and for Reckless General Records, which sees the band working in close collaboration with talented songwriters Hattie Murdoch and Iain Crummie.
RGR, the only label of its kind, is solely run by the artists on its roster. In its first year, the company has partnered with Loft Music to record 3 Soviets songs; released an EP worldwide via digital distributors; reached an agreement with Roxx publishing; and recorded a music video with Toma Jablon (U2, Colour of Fire etc.).
Seamlessly combining memorable songs, unfaltering attitude, acute business sense, drive, and ambition, The Soviets could potentially be one of the most important bands of the coming decade.
The Generals

SUNDERLAND is a city that is brimming with musical talent.
And it seems the city’s sounds are showing no sign of slowing with another band gearing up to be catapulted into the spotlight.
Since unleashing their single A 1000 Days of Me on music fans at a live performance at TJ Doyles last year, The Generals – David Cuthbertson, Steven Dorward, Paul Wormleighton and Matty Stoker – have been going from strength to strength.
Starting life as a duo, best friends David and Steven, AKA Cuth and Doss, found their love of music while pouring over their parents’ record collections.
It wasn’t long before the couple were banging out cover versions of tracks they had discovered, and it took even less time for them to hit the city’s music scene, gigging at some of the region’s pubs and clubs under the name of Tremmor.
After building up a strong fanbase, the boys went on a mission to recruit new members.
Queue Paul Wormleighton on bass and Craig Barnes on drums and new band name, Carnation.
The band hit the road and wowed fans at a string of gigs across the country.
But fame under the banner of Carnation was to be short lived as Craig announced he was quitting the band.
The trio to found a new drummer – Matty Stoker – and played a stunning set at Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club.
The band took time out to pen new songs and work on existing ones and decided to change the name once again and The Generals was finally born.
After more gigs and a stint in the Cluny Studio, the four-piece recorded their single A 1000 Days of Me.
Now they plan on treating fans to a sneak preview of new material, including their latest single In The World Today due to be released in January, at TJ Doyles on December 12.
They will also be showcasing their latest material at a gig at 7even on December 17 where they will be performing with fellow Wearside band The Flytes.
David said: “We want to showcase our new songs before we release our single in January. Then we’ve got a load of gigs up and down the country at the start of next year.
“Next year’s definitely going to be a busy year and hopefully 2010 will be the year for us.”
