Sunderland’s annual Chinese New Year celebrations will take place Monday February 15, with one of North East’s biggest parties.
The University of Sunderland’s popular long-running New Year event takes place on Monday, February 15, at the Quayside Exchange in Sunderland. The evening, which will celebrate the Year of the Tiger, includes traditional Chinese dancers, lion dancers and an authentic Chinese meal provided by Sunderland restaurant The Ming Dynasty.
The Sunderland celebrations have gathered pace over the years with the growth in the number of Chinese students at the university and the increase in the city’s Chinese population. Around 400 new students from China and Asia come to Sunderland each year; and according to the latest National Statistics estimates for 2007 there were 1,400 Chinese residents in Sunderland and a further 1,000 from other Asian countries.
The Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, starts officially on February 14.
