The ten weeks programme is a promotion of the City Space and Sports office of Sunderland University.
The programme was running really successfully at the beginning of the academic year and now is continued for the second term. Within the programme everyone has the option of trying a new sport, or get back into sports after a long time absence.
These sporting activities are a great way for those who want to keep feet and active, or increase their physical activity, but a perfect opportunity to socialize, meet new friends and be a member of a team!!!
Courses starting at the 1st of February, sessions apply mainly to beginners and everyone who wants to get involved, but the sports officers will give us more details,
Oliver Nightingale, Sport Promotion office explains how can someone benefit from the programme:
“We promote the ten week programme to try get people into sport or back to the sport, so if someone played a sport before in the sport and not playing that anymore, then he can come and get some beginners sessions, then hopefully after the ten weeks of coaching we can introduce him to one of our teams or to local team.”
“There are health benefits but more social benefits…I run the football sessions and we have a lot of international students, they don’t know a lot of people and after a couple of hours a week of coaching, they meet people and become friends and out of the session.”
Sam Brown, the Sports and Wellness Development officer says who could participate to the programme:
“For someone to get involved in the NewSport programme, they don’t need to have any previous experience…The programme is all about beginners so if you don’t have tried something before and you want to give it a go, we ‘ve got a number of sports to with coaches for people to try.”
David Pepper, Sport and Activities officer give us details in the kind of the sports provided:
“ we ‘ve got a range of sports, in the NewSport programme, trampolining, table tennis, netball, football, basketball, netball, karate, climbing, volleyball and badminton, any team sports and individual sports, the idea is to train people and then to join the club and from then they can progress into higher levels of participation.”
All the sports are taking place in the City Space except Trampolining which is based in Crowtree Centre.
