As over 3,000 students graduate Sunderland University this week, a number of famous faces have received honorary doctorates from the University.
 
Yesterday it was writer Val McDermid’s turn to receive the honor, the popular crime writer has sold 10 million copies of her books worldwide and won a number of awards.
 
In the past she has won the Stonewall Writer of the Year Award, LA Times Book of the Year Award and the CWA Gold Dagger to name a few.
 
McDermid’s book ‘Wire in the Blood’ was even turned into a popular ITV series starring Robson Green. She has been awarded an honorary doctorate for Outstanding Achievements as an Author.
 
University of Sunderland Vice Chancellor Peter Fidler said the University was delighted to honor the writer and journalist who has excelled in her profession.
 
This year’s graduation ceremonies are the biggest in Sunderland University history, over four days 3,000 graduates from eighty-nine countries will graduate.
