Sunderland University has told Spark FM, it will be announcing its tuition fees increase on Thursday.
It comes as many more universities than first thought have announced they will charge the highest possible tuition fees from 2012.
The maximum of £9,000 pounds a year was only expected to be used in exceptional circumstances.
From Universities asked two thirds have said they intend to charge the maximum. Today is the deadline for institutions to explain their fees and charges.
Labour leader Ed Miliband says the new fees system will cost more in the long term.
The National Union of Students says it expects Universities to offer discounted prices during clearing in order to fill places.
One local Uni to announce it plans to charge the maximum is Durham University with Northumbria announcing fees of £8,500 per year.
