Northumbria University has revealed it wants to charge £8,500 a year in tuition fees from next year.
The institution said a £14.5 million per year bursary and scholarship scheme would be introduced.
A measure the Uni say would be likely to benefit 40% of those attending.
It comes as neighboring Newcastle University said it would be charging the maximum £9000 in tuition fees. Durham University also plan to charge the maximum.
It was announced the cap of tuition would be increased last year resulting in mass protest from students across the country.
Adam White the president of the local student’s union said it understood the University had to charge a fee which “reflected the quality of the institution and its qualifications”.
