Durham University has announced it intends to implement the highest level of tuition fees when the cap is increased from next year.
The institution wants to charge £9,000 a year but says it will announce scholarships and bursaries in the spring.
This latest announcement follows similar news from Oxford, Cambridge and Exeter.
Durham University Vice-Chancellor has defended the move saying students at Durham attain “life-long rewards” during and after study.
Sam Roseveare said investing in a degree at Durham is well worth it:
“Competition for places at Durham in several subjects is the highest in the UK and a Durham degree is worth the investment.”
The government has warned that Universities should not all hope to charge the maximum. They initially said Universities would only be allowed to charge the maximum in exceptional circumstances.
