ArtyParti – Silent Voices
In commemoration the Victoria Hall Disaster of 1883, where 183 children lost their lives, the collaborative project Silent Voices will finish with two tributes today; near the statue in Mowbray Park at 11am, and at the Sunderland Minster at 2pm.
Funded by the Cultural Spring, Contemporary Fine Artist & Freelance Participatory Arts Facilitator Lyn Killeen has been hosting workshops over the past 10 weeks to make painted glass jars with the community; 183 in total, one for each child who lost their life. Candles inside these jars will be lit at the tributes.
On this week’s ArtyParti, Lyn joined us live to talk about the project, along with Bernadette Gibson, a volunteer from Living History North East, who performed a short extract from the moving “Gravities and Gaieties”. This song, adapted from an 1883 poem by Eileen Richardson, will be performed by the Sunderland INterGenerational Singers, as the candles are lit at both of today’s tributes.
